The release of the film ‘The Black Swan’ has catapulted ballet to the mainstream. With fashion and fitness both inspired, foot experts from The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists offer advice to help minimize damage to the feet when following this trend.
Professional dancers are no strangers to the perils of ballet shoes, which offer the feet little cushioning, leaving the lower leg and foot to absorb the full impact of movement. This puts increased pressure on the knees, hip and back, which over time can increase a person’s chance of developing arthritis. The lack of support offered by the shoe can also lead to painful muscle strain. Ingrown toe nails and split nails are also common amongst ballet dancers.
Pointe shoes contain a hard resin block in the toe box and are the worst offenders, as they cramp and crush the toes, causing blisters, corns and split toe nails. They also exacerbate bunions and other foot deformities.
Similar problems are associated with ballet inspired fashion flat shoes. Like the dance shoe, this style offers little to no support to the foot, causing increased pressure on the joints in the lower body. Because these shoes contain no strap to support the foot and keep it in place, it also means toes are likely to claw in order to keep the foot in the shoe.
Lorraine Jones, a podiatrist from The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists said “Ballet is a wonderful art form. If you do practice ballet seriously or are taking it up as a hobby, it’s vital you take precautions to help minimize damage to the feet and relieve pain. Gel pads, toe spacers, plasters and tape can all help relieve pressure points. You should also do daily calf stretches in order to keep muscles supple and prevent cramping. On your non ballet days try to wear a supportive shoe like a trainer or lace up brogue to give your feet a break.
Lorraine added: “If you embrace ballet fashion then try to opt for a shoe with a slight heel and higher sides which offers the feet a little more support. Try not to wear them for long periods, particularly if you are doing a lot of walking, and make sure you alternate regularly with a more supportive shoe.
